Yoga Therapeutics
Hart Lazer will teach his 4-part Therapeutic series at The Shala in 2012/2013
A 150-hour program with Hart Lazer for yoga teachers and intermediate level students looking to build a foundation in understanding and approaching asana, meditation and breathwork in a healing way.
In this program you will:
1. learn to observe and assess your own body and others bodies at the musculoskeletal level.
2. explore the causes of pain from this point of view and how it most commonly manifests in therapeutic issues for yoga students
3. discover tools for relief and strengthening
4. investigate the more subtle levels of the organ systems and how the breath moves in bodies.
Module 1: The musculoskeletal system from the skin to the bones (40 hours)
Dates: May 20-22, June 24-26, & Sept. 16-18, 2012
Fees: $600+tax, due upon registration
In this unit we will explore:
1. hips, groins, knees, lower back, upper neck and shoulders, sciatica and lumbar compressions
2. the causes of pain, the relationship between pain and the nervous systems response to pain.
3. the relationship between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, the nervous system and therapeutic foundations.
4. how to work with varying levels of body stability as a way of preventing injuries in asana.
Plus: an overview including the physiology of yoga, anatomy of pain in asana, and the use of the mind and visualization to heal the musculoskeletal layers
Module 2: Digestion and Organic Detoxification (40 hours)
Dates: Oct. 28-30, 2012 & Jan. 11-13, 2013 *DATE CHANGE*
Fees: $600+tax, due upon registration
Given the importance on proper digestion emphasized by Ayurveda, we will begin with the digestive system from the Ayurvedic, Chinese and Western models.
In this unit we will look at the movements of the apana vayu, and will explore practices and poses for:
1. constipation,
2. diarrhea,
3. healthy elimination,
4. irritable bowel syndrome,
5. ulcers and
6. colitis, in their simpler form.
Module 3: The Cardiac, Respiratory and Circulatory Systems (35 hours)
Dates: Mar. 10-12 & Apr. 14-16, 2013
Fees: $550+tax, due upon registration
This unit will include an in-depth look at cardiac health from the Iyengar perspective as well as the Western and Ayurvedic models.
You will be exploring practices for:
1. blood pressure issues
2. post heart attack,
3. asthma,
4. bronchitis,
5. sinus issues
6. hay fever.
Module 4: Stress and the Immune System (35 hours)
Dates: May 26-28 & June 30- July 2, 2013
Fees: $550+tax, due upon registration
Here we will study common stress related disease and how to work with them in an individualized way.
In particular we will look at:
1. stress headaches,
2. stress related neck pain,
3. shoulder and chest pain,
4. psychogenic pain
As well as how to set up practices that balance and strengthen the immune systems.
Some exploration of autoimmune disorders will be discussed and suggested formats for working with them will be introduced.
Most weekends will tentatively run as follows:
Sunday 9:30-11:30am, 1-5pm
Monday 7am-4pm
